Vrangfoss Locks
About Vrangfoss Locks
The name ‘Vrangfoss’ refers to the place - once a violent, unruly waterfall that created great challenges for rafters who transported timber.
Before the canal was built, the river cut through a dramatic two-kilometre gorge filled with rushing waterfalls and narrow passages. Here, in the wild rapids, the rafters struggled to loosen the massive timber rafts. Using ropes and harnesses, they climbed down into the narrow gorge, and it took courage and skill to free the logs from the river's grip. The work was dangerous and many lost their lives in the struggle against the forces of nature (Source: Telemarkskanalen).
